You’re likely seeing people sound off on social media calling for you to “call your representatives” — heck, my whole schtick is writing to my rep.
And with a week like this, there’s no shortage of things to write about 😵💫.
Politics can often feel like you’re screaming to a void.
Like no matter what you do, the people in charge will just do what they want?
I get it.
It’s frustrating, but worse, you feel powerless.
But here’s the thing — writing to your representative is important, your job as a citizen/voter in this country and can actually a difference.
Now, I’m not saying one email will suddenly change everything, but I am saying that when enough people speak up, it creates pressure.
And pressure?
That’s how we get things done.
Why should you bother?
Here’s the deal —your representative works for you (even if it doesn't always feel like it). Their office tracks every letter, email, and phone call to see what issues matter to their constituents.
If they get flooded with messages on a topic, they have to pay attention.
And if they don’t?
That silence speaks volumes when election season rolls around.
But does it actually change anything?
Short answer: Yes.
Maybe not instantly, but history shows that public pressure works. Representatives have changed their votes, walked back bad policies, and even introduced new bills because people demanded it.
Even if they don't shift immediately, letters create a public record. If they ignore their constituents, that’s something we can call them out on later.
You better believe that I’m tracking every single letter (and lack of response) I’m sending to Randy.
What if they ignore you?
If your representative isn’t responding, that’s not a sign to stop —it’s a sign to turn up the heat.
Go public. Share your letters online, tag them, and let people know they’re not answering.
Get your community involved. The more people writing, the harder it is to ignore.
Show up in person. Town halls, public events and start asking your questions face-to-face.
Because here’s another thing: if we don’t speak up, they assume we’re fine with whatever they are doing.
And I don’t know about you, but I am not fine with politicians ignoring farmers, small business owners, women’s healthcare or working families while catering to big donors and lobbyists.

Hi 👋 we’re Letters to Randy! After our congressman, Randy Feenstra, U.S. Representative, Iowa 4th Congressional District, stopped responding to our emails, we figured — why not make them public?
Our goal? To hold him accountable, make some noise, and remind him who he actually works for.
Why share? Because the louder we are, the harder we are to ignore. Every share puts more pressure on Feenstra to actually do his job. Read the letter that started it all.
